Taking Care Of A Gun Safe Properly

Posted on: 29 December 2015

If you are a gun owner, chances are you have a gun safe in your home to house your firearms. It is very important to keep guns away from children and those not authorized to use them, making a gun safe a wise investment that will not only keep your guns safe from theft but also people safe from the guns themselves. Taking care of a safe is important so it will not be difficult to open should the need arise to grab a gun quickly. Here are some steps to take when maintaining a gun safe.

Cleaning The Exterior Walls

If the exterior of a gun safe is not cleaned properly, it can quickly become worn and may cause trouble for the hinges or locking mechanism if dirt on the safe is pushed toward these areas.. To clean a safe, use a piece of damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the exterior walls. It is best to use this type of cloth on textured, powder coated, or glossy finishes so it does not cause any scratches in the material.

Wiping Down The Metal Hardware

When cleaning the metal hinges, locking dial, and handle, do not use a solvent or metal polishing agent. These metal hardware pieces usually come treated with an anti-tarnishing coating. To keep this coating intact, it is best to use a mild detergent or just plain water on a non-abrasive cloth to wipe down the hardware.

Checking The Fireproof Capabilities

Most guns safes will have a fireproof coating inside the safe along the interior walls to help keep guns from firing or from damage due to a fire in the home. They will also have a seal around the door portion that helps keep flame from getting inside. If this coating or the fireproof seal around the interior door area appears to be ripped or damaged in any way, call a professional locksmith to evaluate the gun safe to see if a replacement or repair is needed.

Oiling The Locking Bolts

The locking bolts should be oiled every few months or so to keep them from becoming stuck. Add a dab of grease to the bolts to keep them in good sliding order. If they happen to become stuck even after using oil, call a locksmith like A-AAA Locksmiths, LLC to have them serviced. It is a good idea to have the entire gun safe evaluated every year or two so it continues to work as it should.
