4 Components Of The Ideal Home

Posted on: 30 December 2015

Whether you are designing a home for yourself or a home or apartment you intend to turn around and sell or rent for a profit, everyone has their own idea of what is considered the "ideal home". Fortunately, there are a few components everyone tends to look for in a home.

1. An Abundance of Storage Space

There are few things more frustrating than not having enough space for all of your things. Fortunately, there are easy ways to maximize the space of various rooms in a home in order to increase storage space.

  • Add Kitchen Rollouts: Very rarely is a person satisfied with the amount of cabinet space available in his or her kitchen. Adding rollouts, which are just pull-out drawers/shelves is an easy way to add additional storage space without needing more room in the kitchen. These additional shelves can be perfect for storing pans, pots, cooking sheets, or dried foods. You have the option of buying finished kitchen rollouts or building some on your own.
  • Add an In-The-Wall Cabinet: It is not uncommon for a bathroom to be incredibly cramped. Bringing a shelf into the bathroom and hooking it to the wall may not be possible depending on how big the bathroom is. You can, however, cut a hole into the wall and build a cabinet inside of the wall. Technically, you could add in-the-wall cabinets to just about any room in the house to create additional storage space.

2. Single Story

While some people enjoy a home with multiple stories, they are impractical for most people. Not only is maintenance a hassle with a multiple story home, the temperature is often more difficult to regulate.

3. Natural Lighting

Natural lighting will provide you with both light and warmth during the day. During the winter months, you will enjoy basking in the warm sunlight near your window while using the natural lighting to read a book. Consider putting solar panels on the roof to really maximize how much natural lighting and energy the home utilizes. This will do wonders for the overall value of the home if your end goal is to sell or rent it for a profit. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory estimates that installing a solar energy system can add roughly $15,000 to the overall value of a home.

4. Outdoor Space

The outdoor space around a home is just as important as the inside for most people. Some want a big and beautiful yard with lots of plants, shrubs, and trees. Others would prefer a patio for entertaining guests. Then, you have some who just want a nice privacy fence to provide a safe place for their children and pets to play. Creating an outdoor space that provides security, privacy, and the opportunity for entertainment will increase the value and appeal of the home.

With these tips, you will be able to design a home that is ideal for a large group of people. Whether an individual is single, recently married and looking to start a family, or already has a family – these tips will create a functional home for them all. These design tips are even helpful if you are just designing a home for yourself.
