6 Winter RV Storage Tips You Need To Know As A 1St Time RV Owner

Posted on: 14 January 2016

If you just purchased your first RV, and are getting ready for your first winter, you need to know how to store it properly. Here are five things you need to know about winter RV storage as a new RV owner.

#1 Make Sure Your Information Is Current

If you don't have room on your property to store your RV during the winter, or you just want to open up space in your driveway during the winter months, and you plan on storing your RV at a storage facility, you need to have your information in order.

You will need to show proof that your registration, license plates and insurance are all-to-date and current. If any of these items will expire while your RV is in storage, you need to stay on top of renewing those documents and be prepared to share the renewal with your storage company

#2 Take It To The Mechanic

Before you store your RV for the winter, take it to your mechanic and make sure that everything is in good working order. You don't want to store an RV that is damaged; you will only have to deal with the damage when you get your RV out in the spring.

Let your mechanic know that you are preparing to store your RV and ask them to check all the fluid levels. Your oil should be changed and the oil filter should be replaced. If you'll be driving it straight from the mechanics to your storage facility, ask them to put in a fuel stabilizer as well.

#3 Throughly Clean The Inside

Remove all food that you have stored in your RV. Wipe down the inside of all your cabinets. Clean the outside of your cabinets and clean all the counters. Vacuum your entire RV.

#4 Unplug & Turn Off Everything Inside Of Your RV

Defrost and remove all food from your refrigerator. Unplug your refrigerator. Be sure to leave the refrigerator door open when you store your RV; this will allow air to circulate in your RV and will prevent your fridge from developing an odor.

Unplug your air conditioning unit. Clean the filters in your air conditioning unit. If you have a dehumidifier in your RV, unplug that as well and make sure that you clean the filter and empty out the water storage tank for your dehumidifier.

Turn off the gas connections to your kitchen appliances.

#5 Close The Windows

Wash your windows inside and out. Then, close your windows and make sure that the seals around them are secure. You don't want little critters getting into your RV through your windows.

Close your blinds as well; this will help prevent the sun from damaging and fading your fabrics and carpets.

#6 Cover The Tires

Once you have it parked in place, put protective tarps over all of your tires. This will help keep them in good shape as they sit for a few months. If you have a cover for your RV, have someone help you put it on. This will keep your RV safe and protected while it is in storage.

If you follow all of the tips above, your RV should make it through its first winter in storage, and come out looking as nice as it did when it went into storage. To learn more, contact a company like Advanced Realty
