If you are a single person in the process of looking for an apartment to rent, you will want to take additional steps in making sure the home you select is safe from potential break-ins or theft. When someone lives alone, vulnerability may be a concern, making safety features a huge draw when finding the right apartment. Here are a few tips to use when looking at apartments to make sure the one you decide to move into has adequate protection from people trying to break inside.
Check The Lighting
Make sure the apartment you are interested in renting has adequate lighting near all entryways. This will usually help keep intruders from getting too close, as they would be in the public eye if they step into an illuminated area. If the apartment is on a busy street or part of a complex building, make sure there are street lights near the front of the home to help keep break-ins from occurring as easily.
Consider A Secured Location
Many apartment complexes have their own security on-site to help deter intruders from trying to get into an apartment at all. Gated communities will require you to use a key card or pass code to enter the area. Some apartment complexes have security guards at the gate as well as patrolling the areas around the apartments. If the apartments are not gated, they may still have security personnel on the property. These types of apartments are deemed much safer overall, as there will always be someone keeping a watchful eye for any suspicious activity.
Attempt To Meet Neighbors
Before signing a rental agreement, knock on the doors of any neighboring units or homes to meet the inhabitants. This will help you get a feel for the type of neighborhood you are living in, and you will most likely be able to tell if the neighbors seem like people you would be able to trust. If the neighbors are rude when you introduce yourself, chances are it might not get better after you move in. This could lead to hard lifestyle overall, so it is best to find out beforehand whether the people surrounding the unit are tolerable to live near or not. If the neighbors make you nervous in any way, move on to another apartment.
Find Out Landscaping Rules
If the apartment you wish to rent has overgrown bushes or trees nearby, ask the landlord if they would handle the trimming themselves. If they do not allow you to trim any of the landscaping, find out if there is a maintenance department that handles this task. If they would rather keep the foliage as it is, consider looking at another apartment, as overgrown brush can be used as a hiding area.
