Want Your Own Small Garden Center in Your New Home? Things You Should Consider

Posted on: 28 October 2016

If you love flowers and would like to have your own garden center to make money, you need to consider certain things when buying a new home. Below are two of these things to help you find a home that will suit you and your business.

The Land

Before you even start looking, consider how much land you will need for your business. Even if you are starting out small, your business may thrive, and you will need more room. For this reason, add a couple of acres on top of what you expect you'll need.

The land should be flat with no slope. If there is a slope, each time it rains, the water will flow towards your business. You can hire a landscape designer to come to the property before you purchase it to determine if there is any kind of slope.

You will likely want to plant your own flowers on your property. This shows your customers that you have experience and know what you are doing.

To do this, the soil needs to be in good condition. Dig out some soil and put it in your hand and squeeze. If the soil holds its shape when you let go of it but crumbles if you poke at it, the soil is great for planting. Soil that does this is moist but loose enough to contain air pockets that can hold in moisture and nutrients. Check the soil in different areas on the property.

The Home

Because you have a garden center, you may often have soil on your shoes. For this reason, look for a house that has a mud room. This is the room that you will automatically walk into so you can take off your shoes before you step into the home.

You should have your own office so the home should have an extra room for this. For example, you could turn an extra bedroom into an office.

You may want to have a good view of your garden center. If so, find a home that has a lot of windows that face your business.

Your customers may be able to see your home while they are at your garden center. Even if they can only see it a little it is important that the home be in good condition on the outside. For example, if the home has vinyl siding, it should be completely clean and intact. The roof should be in good condition and the gutters not hanging loose in any areas. The landscaping of the home should be neat and well taken care of.

Your real estate agent is the best person to go to for help with this. Because you are building a business, you will likely be in your home for a very long time, and the agent can help you find the perfect home.
