Getting Your House Ready To Put On The Market

Posted on: 14 July 2019

If you are considering putting your house on the market and selling it, there are some things you can do to get your property ready for the market. Sometimes the small details make a big difference, so take the time to make sure your home offers a great first impression to potential buyers.

Curb Appeal

When you are ready, take a walk around the house and look at it from the street. Look for things that look out of place or for damage to the house. Loose roof shingles, missing siding, or peeling paint can all lower the selling price and while it may mean spending a little money before you list the home, the increase in price could be substantial with just a few repairs.

The grass, walkways, and plants around the house are important as well. If you have landscaping around the home, make sure that it is not full of weeds or have hardscape items that are out of place. You may want to replace some of the plants with new nursery-grown plants that are going to look their best before you start showing the home.

Keep the grass cut every week so that the yard looks nice, rake up leaves, and pick up any fallen branches or sticks around the house. If you have a pet that spends a lot of time outside, make sure that the yard is free of dog waste, fill in any holes that are in the yard, and if there is a lot of worn grass in the year, add some grass seed to help fill in any spots that the pets may have worn down as they are running around the yard.

Interior Improvements

Take a look around the interior of the home for things you may be able to improve to help with the presentation of the home. Touching up scratches on the walls or replacing things like broken or cracked light switches or outlet covers can make a huge difference in how the home looks when people are walking around the house.

Clean the carpets if they need it before you open the home to shoppers and make sure that any damaged carpet is repaired or replaced. If you have pets, it is important that the house does not smell like pets or have animal hair all over the carpets.

Replace light bulbs that are out so that lights work when people try and turn them on. A light with a bulb that is not functioning may be perceived as a light that does not work and may make a buyer feel that the house has not been well maintained.
